Mycelium Planters

We were inspired to start playing with mycelium at Fern & Fossil, after attending a workshop led by designer Danielle Trofe, at the GROW EXHIBIT in Industry City (Brooklyn),

During the workshop, we made a simple planter using a small deli container as a form.

My results were not very successful but, we decided to buy more material to grow our own planters for our upcoming Fern & Fossil Pop-Up Shop.

What is Mycelium?
Mycelium is the vegetative part of a fungus or fungus-like bacterial colony, consisting of a mass of branching, thread-like hyphae.

A Versatile Material.
Mycelium can be combined with a substrate like straw or hemp to create a unique design or building material. You can get your hands on some from GIY.

Why Mycelium?
Though the process can be tricky (growing mycelium requires a sterile environment) the risk of contamination is worth the reward: a biodegradable, sustainable material.

Creating designs using mycelium as a material was simple multi-step process. (You can get full instructions on the GIY website.) Here are some photos of our first try:
