Plant of the Month April 2021: Coral Cactus (Rhipsalis cereuscula)

Spring is here! Time for that often talked about but difficult to start annual SPRING CLEANING!!! So, what ARE you going to do with the hoard of mason jars from all that canning you didn't do in the Fall? Is it still a thing to use them as drinking glasses? Well, before you put them out on the curb, might we suggest a bit of reuse before the recycle? Gather them along with little whatnots and trinkets you have floating around the house or in that universal junk drawer; it's time to make a terrarium!

We took a charming Rhipsalis cereuscula aka coral cactus and gave it a new home in and trusty mason jar. As you can see, this shrub-like cactus grows in a coral pattern. It sprouts from a center stem and branches out as to reach the sun. It provided the perfect shade for our bright purplesaurus rex. This is a perfect teaching tool for the little ones to learn all about taking mismatched items and giving them a second chance instead of filling up our landfills. Reduce, reuse and recycle is one of the best ways in which we can help heal the planet one jar a time.

We partnered up with STEAM Urban and put together a tutorial on how to make your own recycled terrarium using household items, click here.

Coral Cactus (Rhipsalis cereuscula) needs the following care:

Light ☀️ Full sun to light shade.
Water 💧Only when soil is completely dry. Do not overwater.
Grow 🌱 Indoors or Outdoors in Frost Free Climates. These are not cold hardy plants.
