Meet Nelise, Founder of Nelise Nasheida

Meet Nelise Charles Bey, founder of Nelise Nasheida textiles. This Saturday, April 16th, Nelise will be teaching a 3 hour workshop on Botanical Bundle Dyeing at our Newark, NJ location. We wanted to learn more about Nelise as an artist and textile designer. We’ve also included a special discount to Saturday’s workshop for our readers to enjoy!

Tell us a little about yourself. How did you get into textile art?

My name is Nelise, I was born in St. George's, Grenada - came to Brooklyn, New York when I was 6 and have been living there ever since. I had no knowledge of silkscreening until I moved to Newark, NJ. Learning that process furthered my craft and interest for textiles. The canvas floor runners I currently produce started out by alleviating a need I had as a new renter. That blossomed into the business that I run today.

The last few years have been challenging for everyone, including creatives. Do you have a ritual that helps you get into the creative mindset?

Unfortunately, no. I honestly try to create when I feel like it. Most days I don't feel creative at all. Thinking about it now, I always feel more "out of my head" when I'm in nature. I say if you're ever feeling stuck creatively, simply get outside- go for a walk, get some fresh air, try grounding...etc.

What is Nelise Nasheida? And why was it important for you to turn your craft into a brand?
NN is a brand that I turned my love of all things made by hand. I've always loved being hands-on as a child, so it came naturally to want to cut, sew, paint, dye etc and incorporate that into a brand. NN is me personally showcasing how my art and the things I love to do.

You are involved in many aspects of creating your textile products from selecting materials to dyeing fabrics to screen printing. What is your favorite process and why?
I really enjoy the dyeing process and now bundle dyeing and eco printing. Dyeing has scientific aspects throughout its process that I find fascinating.

Tell us about your workshop on April 16th. What will participants learn? What are some key takeaways that you're excited for participants to experience?

Participants will learn how to transfer color from everyday materials like flowers, food scrap and other dye stuff on to silk scarves. They will learn the process of prepping their silk through scouring, mordanting, the process of laying out your dye stuff, steaming, then the final reveal. They will walk away knowing how to dye protein and cellulose fibers, how to determine WOF (width of fabric), different mordanting and scouring techniques and leave with a beautiful custom-designed habotai silk scarf.
