Plant of the Month August 2024: Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)
This month, we’ll be covering something a little different than our usual content. Instead of introducing you all to another succulent, I’d like to present my favorite houseplant: Epipremnum aureum aka Pothos! Pothos is a genus of flowering plants in the Araceae family. Native Pothos can be found in Mo’orea in the Society Islands of French Polynesia near Tahiti, but over time it has been naturalized in tropical and sub-tropical forests across the world. Although Epipremnum aureum has many other names besides Pothos, it is commonly referred to as the Devil’s Ivy due to its ability to retain its green color even when kept in the dark! Hence my deep love for it as a houseplant since I have nearly no direct sun reaching my bedroom. For anyone interested in practicing indoor gardening but has concerns about lighting, this is the perfect plant for you!
Pothos has a ton of different varieties. I have three different variants at home: Golden, Neon, and Manjula Pothos. The most common variety is the Golden Pothos, known for its bright green coloring. But not all Pothos are green in color. Neon Pothos are actually more lime or yellow colored while the Manjula variant is white with green marbleing! Other variants include Pinnatum Pothos (which has leaves shaped more like a chili pepper, N’Joy Pothos (which has white or cream trim along the leaves), Argyraeus or “Satin” Pothos (which has dark green leaves with pale white spots), and many more. Pothos are often confused with Philodendron, but that’s a discussion for a different day
Pothos (Epipremnum aureum) needs the following care:
Light ☀️ Indirect Light, good for homes with mid to low light
Water 💧Only when soil is completely dry. Do not overwater
Grow 🌱 This is not a cold hardy plant. For best results avoid temperatures below 50 F.
