Plant of the Month March 2022: Debbie Succulent (x Graptoveria debbi)

Meet “Debbie”, or more specifically, “x Graptoveria Debbi” a beautiful hybrid succulent with pale purple and pink leaves. Graptoveria are a cross between the succulent species Echeveria and Graptopetalum, which are difficult to create thus making each plant a one of a kind! Like many succulents, these babies have a pastel appearance due to the Farina (epicuticular wax) on their leaves. The Farina protects desert plants from drying in the sun and losing moisture through their petals. During the winter the Debbie plant's petals are richer in color, appearing more purple. However as we move into spring and warmer weather, you can expect to see small apricot colored flowers in the center of its rosette patterned leaves. As a slow growing plant, a mature Debbie succulent is only about 8 inches in diameter, making it perfect for those who have limited space at home for their plant babies.

Taking care of your Debbie plant is easy! As a succulent, it doesn't require much water. One of the biggest mistakes new plant parents make is overwatering. The best way to avoid this is to use the "soak and dry" method. Water your plant only when the soil is completely dry and be sure to have a well draining container for them. Here at Fern & Fossil, we use a layer of clay pebbles to create a reservoir for the water. Debbie plants thrive best in full to partial sun for six hours a day. When you begin exposing your plant to full sun, be sure to do so gradually!

As March rolls in, we're celebrating Women's Month and National Crafts Month. Join us in celebrating by supporting our woman owned business and signing up for one of our exciting upcoming workshops!
