Plant of the Month Nov 2020: Jade (Crassula Ovata)

After a long break, Fern & Fossil is back with Plant of the Month! We’ll be giving you a new plant the first week of every month, starting this November.

This month’s POTM is Crassula Ovata more commonly known as Jade. This guy was tricky one for me to identify because of it’s similar appearance to Flap Jacks aka Paddle Plant. There are several different varieties of Jade, ranging in leaf shape and color, which also made identification a challenge. Jade can be green and turn red or partially red in the cooler months. The color can also change based on sun exposure, waterings, and soil quality.

This large leaf variety of Jade (Crassula Ovata) needs the following care:

Light ☀️ 4-6 hours of indirect sunlight.
Water 💧 Only when soil is completely dry. Do not overwater.
Grow 🌱 Indoors or Outdoors in Frost Free Climates.

The soil should be formulated for adequate drainage to prevent root rot. A succulent/citrus blend from your local hardware or garden store is a good start. Never use potting soil as it retains too much moisture.

For the most part, Jade likes to be neglected. Follow a few basic rules for care and you’ve got a perfect plant for beginner plant owners.
