Plant of the Month July 2021: Jelly Bean Plant (Sedum rubrotinctum)

Sedum pachyphyllum, also known as the jelly bean plant, also called pork and beans, is a very unique and adorable succulent plant that displays jelly bean like leaves. During the fall seasons its green leaves form a soft pink blush on its tips. This is why the term “Maidens heart” was used to describe these plants in Japan, they look as though they are blushing. During the spring they bare beautiful yellow flowers, and in the summer seasons they turn into a bright scarlet red. The jelly bean succulent is native to South Africa and the surrounding regions. It is a species of Sedum from the plant family Crassulaceae, a succulent plant originating in Mexico. This plant will do best outside where it gets a lot of sun, but if you’re unable to do that, you can always leave it next to a window that gets lots of sunlight. Most of the time and jelly bean plants should get at least six hours of sunlight every day. This plant can also withstand drought and tough weather conditions, however if there’s one thing this plant can’t handle, it’s the cold! Your jelly bean succulent will die or become preeminently damaged if exposed to the cold. So keep your plant baby inside the house during those cold winter seasons.

The jelly bean plant makes for a great new house plant not only for its ability to thrive when neglected but because it brings a fun and warm aesthetically pleasing feel to your space. Caring for your plant baby is very easy! When watering your plant make sure you only water when the soil is completely dry. Let it dry out in between waterings. This is where most succulent owners go wrong and accidentally kill their plants! In the wild these plants go without water for months, so they have evolved to be very drought tolerant. You can purchase your very own jelly bean plant terrarium at one of our upcoming pop-up events.
