Plant of the Month June 2022: Stonecrop (Sedum treleasei)
Sedum treleasei, commonly referred to as simply “stonecrop”, is a type of succulent in the Crassula genus and is related to other trailing sedums such as the Jelly Bean Plant, Burro’s Tail, and String of Buttons.
This type of Stonecrop is a powdery greyish blue-green with bubble like leaves and will grow approximately 8” tall before trailing downwards. During the winter-spring season, you may see yellow star-shaped flowers growing in the center of its rosette. Stonecrop is easy to propagate, all you need is a small stem or even a leaf. Place it shallowly in potting soil and a new succulent will sprout in no time!
This Stonecrop, like many other Sedums, is generally unbothered by pests and diseases. Often times, overwatering and lack of sun are the culprits for dying plants so be sure to only water when the soil is completely dry. Our glass containers at Fern & Fossil make it easy to see when your plant baby could use some hydration, just look at the color of the soil. Darker colored soil indicates there’s still moisture in the soil and you should probably hold off on watering.
Be sure to check out Stonecrop and other types of succulents in the Crassula genus such as Jade and Watch Chain in our bubble and 5” hanging terrariums during our graduation sale this month! All gifts are $25 and under and include free gift wrap in store. It’s the perfect gift for both plant loving students and teachers.
